I recenty had the luck of running into Charla Pellot the Activities Director from Atria Sutton. Charla and her boundlessly engergetic crew had a need in her community for culture and the Arts. She also had been left with storage lockers of fabric from a resident moving in who had a sewing store. The combination of my being an avid sewing fan along with Atrias willing assisted living residents got our minds and needles rolling, Soul Sew was born.
I found Angels in the Valley an organization that gives recieving blankets to babies being born in hospitals who have nothing to go home in, and the two organizations seemed to fit. We hold an hour class every friday. I volunteer my time prior to cut the blanket materials and prepare threaded needles for the residents who want to join us and sew them together. In the actual weekly class we learn to topstich and finish the pieces. These recieving blankets are then washed and packaged with the makers name and donated to impoverished families who have a need for them.
We feel good making them and giving them, putting our craft skills to use and that is what it boils down to. Giving my students if even for the hour a week a spark and an opportunity to create a joy.and purpose.we all need.
